Old Town Alexandria – The Sights Of The City

Saturday, September 23 @ 3:30 PM: Our September
field trip will be to the Old Town Alexandria, a town full of
history, people, architecture, boats, water, doors and many
interesting abstracts. George Washington walked the
streets of Alexandria and even slept in some of the homes
and at Gadsby’s Tavern. It is said that Ghosts walk the
streets at night. Many of the buildings are on the National
Register of Historic Places. You never know what you may
see. Be prepared to soak in some history while enjoying an
evening in a fun spot full of homes, shops, restaurants and
interesting sites.
This year the field trip committee is trying to find new and
interesting places to visit but we also need to find places
which fulfill our theme needs as well. As a recap there will
be three themes this year, Night Photography, Abstracts/
Close Ups, and Doors. We feel that we may be able
to find good subjects for each of these themes in Old Town
as the sun come down. There are certainly many doors
available at the many homes (both old and new), the stores
and restaurants along the streets of this colonial town. As
the sun sets we should be able to get some interesting
night photography as well. Anything from reflections in the
water, to the lights in the windows and street lights, we will
be able to use our skills and imagination to get a good Night
Photograph. But don’t forget Abstracts/Close Up. They
can be found anywhere – you just need to keep your eyes
open for that perfect opportunity and use your imagination.
After several hours of finding and shooting the photos of our
choosing, we plan to have a group dinner at one of the
many restaurants in Old Town. We plan to wrap up around
8 PM, but everyone is welcome to stay longer in Old Town
Alexandria to enjoy the night life.
There are history/ghost tours given every evening and on
Saturday evenings they run at 7:00, 7:30, 8:30 and 9:00 PM
for an hour. A costumed tour guide leads you through the
streets of Alexandria telling its history and the stories of
ghosts that have been seen and heard there as well. One
tour even leaves you in a graveyard.
We will carpool from our usual Vienna Metro North parking
lot at 3:3 PM on Saturday, September 23, 2006. Contact
Maryjane.fish@verizonbusiness.com by Friday afternoon or
by cell phone the day of the trip at 703-969-8902. For anyone
who wants to meet us in Old Town we will meet at the
front of the Torpedo Factory at the corner of Union Street
and King Street around 4:00 PM. The sun will set at 7:05
PM so that will give us a couple of hours of daylight and into
the evening.
