Jonathan Newton is entering his 21st season as a professional photographer.

He has played for four teams in his storied career and currently is a sports photographer for The Washington Post.

The Nashville Banner drafted him in the 95th round out of Western Kentucky University in 1986 where he played for a tad more than a year before being shipped off to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution club (for a bag of broken bats and scuffed up balls rumor had it)  where he remained for 10 seasons as a utility player before being “the player to be named later” in a deal with the St. Petersburg Times.

He lasted two seasons in Florida before taking the free agency route and was picked up by The Washington Post. In his six plus seasons at the post he has amassed amazing numbers for an old fart but has yet to bat his weight.

Newton has covered almost every major sporting event in the United States. The 1996 Olympics, 4 World Series, 6 National League Championship series, 6 Final Fours, The Kentucky Derby, The Preakness, several heavyweight bout in Las Vegas, College Football Championships, The Super bowl and countless high school sporting events.

Newton earned numerous awards including the Morris Berman citation for his outstanding contributions to photojournalism, 2006 first place Sports Portfolio for the Northern Short course, multiple first places in the White House News photographers association contest and is a two-time winner in the Baseball Hall of Fame contest.
