NOVEMBER SPEAKER
LAURIE SAND
Our
Speaker for December is Laurie Sand. Her title is Therapeutic Photography: An Opportunity for Artistic Growth.
Laurie Sand is passionate about her photography and
approaches it as a way of life and as an opportunity to learn new things
constantly. Her photographic interests are eclectic and include environmental
portraiture, architecture, landscapes, flowers and abstracts. Her images often
use bold color and strong geometric patterns. Laurie loves working with people
and exploring subjects up close. She likes to try new ideas and is particularly
interested in the therapeutic aspects of photography, which help people cope
with life challenges.
In 1997, Laurie took her first photography class while living in
Trinidad. Later that same year, she moved to Vienna where she joined the Vienna
Photographic Society to learn more about photography. She served as Vice
President for Programs for two years and found the camera club to be an
excellent vehicle to expand her photographic interests and friendships.
In recent years Laurie set two goals for herself. The first was to
convert from film to digital photography, which she has done by studying under
Colleen Henderson and becoming proficient in Photoshop. Laurie works with a
Nikon D200, processing all her own work on a Mac G5 computer and an Epson 2200
printer. Her second goal was to get more experience developing and exhibiting
thematic bodies of work.
Laurie has exhibited at the Inter-American Development Bank, Heart
Gallery, Smith Farms, Washington Cancer Institute, Meadowlark Gardens and
Photoworks. Currently her images can be found at Sibley Memorial Hospital and
Jammin Java and two medical offices. Damon Gallery of Vienna has recently
started selling her photographs. Her present goals are to develop a strong
portfolio of fine art images and complete her website, which she hopes will be
up very soon.
