Roy Sewall Invites VPS Members on a Journey Along the Potomac
The guest speaker for the VPS December program is an acknowledged expert
on the Potomac River, a favorite site of thousands of regional photographers.
Photographer Roy Sewall is the author of two books about shooting the Potomac
and a well-known photography critic and commentator.
His first book, Our Potomac, From
Great Falls Through Washington, D.C., published in
2005, comprises a journey along the river from its raging falls to its graceful
cruise past Georgetown and some of the nation’s iconic national monuments.
Images in the book include, “Great Falls at Dawn,” locks on the C&O Canal,
the Key Bridge shot from inside the Potomac Boat Club, scullers plying the
river near Rosslyn and “Washington Harbor at Twilight.”
Roy has been a judge for many photographic clubs in the Washington
metropolitan region, including the League of Reston Artists, the North Bethesda
Camera Club and the Frederick Camera Clique. He believes the principal purpose
of a photographic judge is to be an educator and says his most important
criteria are emotional impact, artistry and technical issues.
Once an engineering manager and business developer for defense, space
and transportation companies, Roy became a full-time professional photographer
in 2002. He still does business development consulting for software companies.
His second book, “Great Falls and Mather Gorge,” is to be released in
early 2009. His guest appearance for VPS is Dec. 3.
