Photographer Steve Uzzell to Bring “The Nature of Transition” to VPS

Steve Uzzell, the internationally renowned photographer and inspirational speaker, will make a guest appearance with VPS in January. Steve’s work has taken him on assignment to 50 states and 21 countries. His lengthy roster of photographic clients ranges from corporations such as Boeing and IBM to more than 50 publications including National Geographic, Smithsonian and Time. As a speaker, he has taken his message of creative problem solving to dozens of organizations including the Naval Post Graduate School, Merrill Lynch and Adobe, the maker of photo and video software. The essence of Steve’s work as a photographer and speaker is to enhance the forceful link between creativity and problem solving, enabling others to deal with life’s challenges.

That is the thrust of his presentation for VPS which is entitled, “The Nature of Transition” and illustrated with Steve’s extraordinary photographs. He says, “We’ve all heard it, and we’ve all said it – about our organizations, about our workplace, about the economy, about our lives: ‘We are in such a state of transition.’ But what does it mean to be in transition? What was it like when we were not in transition? When does it start? How do we know when we are finished? Should we fear it or look forward to it?”

He believes transition is not something to fear or avoid but to embrace. This is especially true for photographers because he views transition as the most exciting step in the creative process.

Steve began his photography career as the assistant to the editor of National Geographic and a member of its photographic staff. He struck out on his own in 1975 and today spends six months of the year traveling the world for his photographic clients and the rest as a teacher and inspirational speaker. The several portfolios on his website, www.steveuzzell.com, include the haunting “Haleakula Moonrise,” a portrait of Johannes Michelsen, a maker of wood hats, and several images from Maryland including “Kilgore Falls,” “Chesapeake Bay Bridge Sunset,” and the dramatic seascape, “Running Before the Storm.”

Steve’s appearance with VPS is scheduled Jan. 6.
